Chicago‘s Cook County Jail may be murders’ row, but backstage, the queens of the clink are having a marvelous time. After years of dancing around it, the long-running Kander and Ebb musical now stars fan favourites (and close friends) Bianca Marroquín as Roxie Hart and Tony nominee Robyn Hurder as Velma Kelly. The journey to co-stardom has been a winding one for the duo—Hurder started off as Marroquín’s understudy when she played Roxie in 2017.

Despite multiple Broadway leading roles under her belt and fresh off of leading the workshop of the Broadway-bound SMASH musical, Robyn Hurder says she was “terrified” during her first performance starring as Velma Kelly in Chicago.

Cosmopolitan sat down with the queen of queens to talk about gender-blind casting, living out her dreams, and her new chosen name outside of drag, Hera.

Ariana Madix has just over two weeks left in her dream job at the Ambassador Theatre. In January, she made her Broadway debut as Chicago’s latest Roxie Hart, and has been killing eight times a week, soaking in a career milestone years in the making.
